In 1981, with an initial $500 donation from The Telluride Elks Club and assistance from local churches, Social Services founded Angel Baskets to provide food and clothing for 8 needy families.
That same Christmas program now serves more than 200 families comprised of more than 700 adults and children, in San Miguel County, Nucla, Naturita, Redvale and Paradox (the west end of Montrose County). It requires dozens of volunteers and thousands of dollars in cash, food and gifts.
Angel Baskets is an all-volunteer organization with no overhead costs. The space utilized each year in December to assemble the holiday gifts and the year-round storage spaces are both donated.
Recognizing that hunger and poverty in the community exist year round, Angel Baskets developed new programs to provide food and necessities throughout the year.
